Reznicek is exactly the kind of Viennese institution we adore: traditional, slightly quirky, and all the better for it. Hidden in the city's 9th district, it serves classic Austrian cooking with a twist, delivered through some of the most charming and wonderfully humorous service. While it's hard to go wrong with anything on the menu, the Cordon Bleu with cucumber and potato salad is essential, followed by Palatschinken filled with apricot jam and a plate of Mohnnudeln for dessert. The final act comes when you ask for the bill: a waiter wheels over a mobile counter of sweets – the sort we were all obsessed with as children – and invites you to choose your favourites, which are then presented with the ceremony and prestige of a caviar service.
