A visit to the Imperial Palace is one of Tokyo’s essential experiences. The East Gardens occupy the former grounds of Edo Castle, with imposing stone walls, historic gates, expansive lawns and traditional Japanese landscaping. We recommend exploring with a guide first to understand the significance of the site, then leaving time to wander independently. On a sunny day, the greenery, carefully maintained gardens and reflections across the surrounding moats make it a particularly beautiful place to walk, and a welcome pause from the pace of the city.
Séntire’s take: Don’t rush through the gardens simply to tick off another Tokyo landmark. Give yourself time to explore the paths, admire the views across the water and enjoy the contrast between the historic grounds and the skyscrapers beyond. Afterwards, continue east towards Marunouchi Naka-dori, a tree-lined avenue of luxury boutiques, Japanese brands, cafés and public art. We particularly loved the association between this area and good fortune and prosperity – an interesting detail to keep in mind as you pass the Japanese brands that have made their mark here. It’s a lovely way to round off an afternoon that brings together Tokyo’s history, contemporary culture and commercial success.
